“Cuenca Dinosaur Route” comes to Fitur

  • The King and Queen of Spain visited the Castile-La Mancha stand, learning about the region’s palaeontological heritage through the “Dinosaurs Route” project
  • Visitors to the trade fair enjoyed the life-size reproduction of one of the dinosaurs that will form part of the route
  • With an investment of €371,000, the route is expected to open in late February

February 2015. The “Cuenca Dinosaurs Route” was presented at Fitur, the International Tourism Fair, which took place in Madrid from 28 January to 1 February. In their visit to the Castile-La Mancha stand, the King and Queen enquired about the project designed to promote Cuenca’s important palaeontological heritage.

Accompanied by María Dolores de Cospedal, the regional president, King Felipe and Queen Letizia saw a life-size reproduction of the hunchbacked dinosaur of Cuenca, one of the main fossils found in the area, and which will be one of the main attractions of the route as it passes through the town of La Cierva.

The three towns with the main archaeological sites, La Cierva, Fuentes and Cañada del Hoyo, are the main stops on the route, as they are where the main paleontological discoveries in the province are to be found. As well as the dinosaur seen at Fitur, the route will include other spectacular recreations, such as an articulated skeleton measuring six metres long of a “Concevanator” sauropod dinosaur discovered at the archaeological site at Las Hoyas in 2003.

Costing €371,000, the “Cuenca Dinosaur Route” route is set to open in late February. Promoted by Cuenca provincial council and managed by Talher, the environmental services company run by Clece, the project forms part of the Tourism Infrastructure Improvement Plan for the province of Cuenca.
